Obama to take on the Gun lobby?

Press conference scheduled for tomorrow to outline ways to reduce gun crime.
He obviously can't do an awful lot on just the few months he has left but his plans are expected to be making gun sellers to ask more than just 'are you mad or a criminal'.
Not sure how it will go down with the Fox News believing rednecks. They'll probably shoot up a school to prove Obama wrong.

there's the hole in your reasoning. average intelligence in the states might pass for barely literate in the UK. As such, you can be quite thick and still make a bit of dosh over here.
The real obstacle is the gun lobby, masquerading as the NRA. You can't sell many pieces of steel at the price point of a firearm, and the bullets are not cheap either. Of course they also sell to the military and law enforcement, and the US leads the world in arms exports, by some margin:

I am going to guess a pink assault rifle is not the cheapest thing to buy. Which makes me guess that the kids parents in those links are reasonably well off if they afford pink rifles for their kids. That implies they have good jobs and there for are above at least average intelligence. That where i get confused, how can you be of above average intelligence and buy your 7 year old a assault rifle, the mind just boggles!

I don't see anybody clamouring to take the GOVERNMENT'S guns away from them.
The US Government dropped 2 atomic bombs, Agent Orange, and invaded more countries than everyone else on earth put together. Not to mention stealing the land of non-white people to found their country in the first instance...

Thing is mashed - no one is suggesting taking the guns away. They are an integral part of the culture, born of the push into uncharted territory, the lack of law and order, the wildness of the country and so on.
It is completely fair for a hunter to want a gun and even parents to want to protect their kids.
What's not reasonable is the complete absence on the part of "responsible" gun owners to accept that their right to own a gun comes with any responsibility.
You can get a gun through some legal channels with fewer restrictions than it takes to get some allergy medications, and certainly less than owning and driving a car.
What I can stand is these childish morons who get up and scream about Obama wanting to take their guns away when all that they are trying to do is to get some control of who can get their hands on firearms of all kinds.
It fucking sickens me that even modest legislation that tries to stop the mentally ill buying an assault rifle and attacking a school is considered an outrage as it interferes with their childish obsession and their need to feel more like a man.
There are genuine reasons for owning guns given the situation in America and they shouldn't be infringed on, but there's also a sick group of people for whom it is an obsession who scream the loudest against anyone that dares question the situation.
It's those fuckers I'd like to see lose their weapons.

It IS ingrained into their culture, it comes from thousands of people heading west and there being absolutely no police force or semblance of law and order whilst they were doing it.
All them Injuns and bandits and Mexicans and buffaloes and stuff cutting about the place. If you didn't have a gun, you were dead and even if you did have one then that was no guarantee of survival but better to be prepared.
That mentality has never gone away.

A big part of America's gun problem is that they treat their "disadvantaged" people like shit.
The reason I use the word disadvantaged is because I don't just mean the poor - I mean the mentally ill, ex-criminals etc.
Its a political problem as well as a cultural one.

In a weird way I can kind of see where the pro-gun people are coming from.
Why SHOULDN'T you be allowed to carry a weapon to defend yourself from a baddie who's also likely to be carrying a weapon?
On the other hand the statistics speak for themselves.
But then there's always these people who point to things like Chicago being one of the murder capitals and there being gun control there so "gun control doesn't work" etc.
Gun ownership is a part of American culture. Gonna take at least one generation to change things.
